I don’t know about you, but I always say that God is my strength. Truthfully, God has been a source of strength for me throughout my life. I have relied on Him for guidance, healing, wisdom, comfort, and stability in all seasons of life, from joyous celebrations to moments of grieving.

When I listen to testimonies from family and friends, I have come to know and understand that God is the ultimate source of strength, wisdom, and unconditional love. He has shown me that He is faithful and that I can always trust Him.

In this article, I will share insight into how truthful the adage that God is my strength is, give biblical examples, and explain them. Indeed, God has been a source of strength for me and has helped me throughout my life.

What is strength?

Strength can be defined in different ways depending on the context. In its most general sense, strength is the ability of an individual or group to exert physical or moral force when overcoming obstacles and resisting or coping with external pressures.

It is also used to refer to mental toughness, or the ability to withstand difficulty despite adversity or opposition.

In a Christian spiritual context, strength is closely associated with faith, belief in God, and absolute reliance on Him.

What does the Bible say about Strength?

When facing challenges, the Bible talks a lot about strength. One of the biggest truths highlighted in the scriptures is that God is the source of our strength. The Bible speaks of God’s power and promises us his presence to bring us strength and peace in difficult times.

Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’

Isaiah 41:10

Throughout the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, we are encouraged to seek strength in God’s word and guidance as well as depend on His power in times of distress.

  • Deuteronomy 33:25 says “Your sandals shall be iron and bronze; As your days, so shall your strength be.”
  • Isaiah 40:29 states “He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might, He increases strength.”
  • In 2 Corinthians 12:9, it says “…My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness…”
  • The book of Psalms 31:24 declares that “Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart, All you who hope in the Lord.”
  • Other passages also convey this same message, such as Jeremiah 17:7-8 which encourages us to put our trust in the Lord and rely on His strength, rather than trusting in our own weaknesses.

In fact, most passages that talk about finding strength go hand-in-hand with relying on God’s presence.

  • For example, Proverbs 18:10 tells us that “the name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe.”
  • Similarly, Psalm 37:39 acknowledges how “…the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord; He is their strength in the time of trouble.”
  • Additionally, 2 Corinthians 12:9 declares that “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

This means the Most High God can give us the courage and perseverance we need while enduring hard times.

Moreover, strength should not be solely derived from ourselves but should be obtained through our faith in God Almighty who is our source of hope during difficult times no matter how harsh life becomes.

By seeking His help, we can find our innermost strength even when faced with daunting circumstances and empower ourselves with courage as we march ahead bravely.

God’s grace serves as a beacon of hope during struggles because His loving presence strengthens people during difficult circumstances. In such moments, our song should be “my strength is God”.

Therefore it’s important during challenging situations to remember to turn to God first when looking for guidance and courage to carry on instead of relying solely on one’s own strength and resources.

The best part of being a Christian is to not wait till challenges come before deciding to depend on God for strength. Our dependence on Him for strength should be a religious affair on a daily basis.

When I face any challenges, I say God is my strength or my strength is God. When others narrate their challenges to me, the first natural thing I say to them is “God is your strength.”

Why is God our Source of Strength?

In times of difficulty, many people look to God as a source of strength and guidance. While our natural instinct may be to rely on ourselves during hard times, in truth, our strength and resilience come from God.

We can draw strength from His Word (the Bible), from His voice, His promises, and His character.

In this section, I will explore what God has to offer us in terms of strength and see why He is the ultimate source of strength.

1. Using the Power of Prayer for God’s strength

Prayer is one of the clearest and most direct ways to connect with God’s strength. The Power of Prayer is well documented in both the Bible and by millions of people from all walks of life that have experienced peace, joy, strength, and resilience through prayer.

In his book, Prevailing Prayer, Dwight L. Moody graphically explains how prayer saw him through some of the most difficult times. When all hope was gone, through prevailing prayer, God showed Himself worthy of who He is.

God’s promise to us is that He will never leave us nor forsake us. He promises that if we ask, He will supply all our needs according to his riches (Philippians 4:19), hence believing in the power of prayer, and praying that my Lord God is my strength is in order.

Every morning, knowing that God is my strength, I always pray. It is helpful for Christians to go into their prayer closet and pray for direction, strength, comfort, and peace. As we make this a daily practice it strengthens our faith and deepens our relationship with God.

When we talk with God in prayer we are able to call upon His power that surpasses all understanding.

Prayer enables us to develop our trust in Him more deeply, which gives us the assurance that as long as we lean on Him he will provide us grace, power, and protection from every evil thing (Romans 16:20).

Through prayer, Christians can find encouragement when feeling overwhelmed with life’s struggles or when oppressed by difficult situations.

With each passing day devoted to prayer, Christians can experience an increased level of spiritual enlightenment as they step into places where only faith can bring them.

Even through hard times, prayer allows believers access to His wisdom which gives them the insight they do not have before in order to tap into their innermost strength found through Him alone. God is the source of Strength! (Philippians 4:13).

2. The Power of Faith in God is my strength

No matter your circumstances, the power of faith can guide you to draw strength from God. Remember what faith is.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped, the evidence of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:1

Basically, it’s trusting in something that we hope and cannot see or even imagine. Our faith makes us who we are and can help us realize our goals and dreams no matter how impossible they may seem. God promises us that He will never leave us nor forsake us, remember?

Through faith, “…we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

Romans 8:28

This verse assures us that, when we are walking with God, no matter the circumstances, all will end well, even our struggles!

When faced with tribulation that feels like too much to bear, turn to the Lord for refuge. He will not only be your strength when you need it most but also give you peace that surpasses all understanding.

...and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:7

Ultimately, in order to truly experience an unshakeable strength from the Lord and freely receive His miraculous gifts, one must have complete trust in Him (Ephesians 3:20).

The power of faith in the saying that God is my strength is based on the following:

  • To take every thought to Christ when we need strength, (“bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ” – 2 Corinthians 10:5)
  • Fasting regularly and praying without ceasing (“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” – Luke 11:9)
  • Increasing in the knowledge of scripture (“…but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.” – 2 Peter 3:18)

Aligning yourself with people of faith and actively serving others through love, you too can overcome any trial head-on through endurance gained by faith (Hebrews 10:37; James 1:12).

Loving God Under Trials

Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

James 1:12 (NKJV)

3. The Power of God’s Love in God is my strength

The power of love is one of the greatest strengths in all of creation.

In the Bible, we learn that God is love (1 John 4:8). It is through love that our Heavenly Father created us, and it is His perfect love that continually sustains us. Divine love surpasses all understanding, and it serves as a mighty source of strength for each one of us.

The power of God’s love can be seen throughout Scripture. From Noah’s obedience when building the arc to protect his family from a great flood to Jesus sacrificing Himself on the Cross for our sins, to the apostles and disciples, who despite facing imminent danger and death, proclaimed the Good News.

Meaning God’s sacrificial love has provided hope and strength to every generation, even us.

Not only did He give them protection and a bright future; but He also gave them peace and security in Him during times of trial and suffering.

When we accept Jesus Christ into our lives, we are accepted into the loving embrace of God’s family (Romans 8:15).

When we experience tough times or heartache, God does not flee from us; instead, He encourages us with His word. We can receive inspirational strength from His assurance that we are not alone in our battles; that He will always provide help and strength when we need it:

Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.

Jeremiah 33:3

When this power fills our hearts and souls, it overflows back out to those around us while making difficult tasks possible in spite of our human frailty, and this is what John meant when he wrote that “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)

The promise of love in God is my strength

Beloved, because God’s infinite source of love endures forever, no matter what circumstances life presents us with, His strength will never fail or diminish (1 Corinthians 13:7-8).

  • As long as lives remain devoted to Him, His loving presence will provide security for each day (Psalms 27:4).

So if you are feeling afraid or unprepared for the unknown paths ahead, be confident knowing that you have access to an endless supply of comfort and spiritual empowerment through Jesus Christ’s transcendent unconditional love!

How to Receive God’s Strength

God is the source of all strength and power, and He promises to give us the strength to face whatever challenges that come our way.

But how can we tap into this power and receive God’s strength for ourselves?

Here, let us explore different ways to tap into the source of God’s strength so that we can walk confidently in His strength.

1. Spend Time in Prayer

To receive God’s strength, begin by spending time in prayer. Prayer is simply having a conversation with God.

It can take any form; it could mean talking out loud and having a discussion, closing your eyes and meditating on what you need strength for and letting the Holy Spirit provide the words to say, or reading through Bible passages to gain insight into how to apply their meaning in all areas of life.

Talk with Him about things of importance, such as how you feel, and ask Him questions on how He wants you to handle a certain situation.

As you build a close relationship with Him through prayer, He will be able to fill your heart with His peace and love as well as His strength.

Additionally, consider praying Scripture over your life, which are individual verses from the Bible that encourage a particular area of life that needs. I find the Book of Psalms very convenient in such moments.

See, the Word of God is alive and is able to speak truth over every situation that arises. Praying Scripture also helps us trust in the Lord’s promises and better prepares us for times when we feel weak or powerless.

During difficult times, consider meditating on the following verses:

  • “He gives power to the weak,
And to those who have no might, He increases strength.” (Isaiah 40:29).
  • “So I will strengthen them in the Lord,
And they shall walk up and down in His name,”
    Says the Lord.” (Zechariah 10:12).
  • “God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1).

2. Study the Bible

Reading, studying, and meditating on the Bible are important aspects of building a strong faith.

The Bible is the inspired, infallible Word of God. It contains all we need to know to live for Him. When we take time to read and meditate upon Scripture, two essential things happen:

  • We become more knowledgeable about God and His will for our lives.
  • We receive strength from His truths to help us walk in faith, obedience, and joy.

An amazing truth is that when we spend time reading Scripture, it’s not just our minds that are filled with God’s truth but also our spirits – it’s a transformation process!

The Holy Spirit will come alongside us as we read and convict us of sin, help renew our minds, give us hope in difficult situations, and show us how to forgive as Christ has forgiven us. He will even give us peace in tough circumstances!

So start reading the Bible today! Begin by seeking God through prayer & turn your passions into prayerful plans with Him; tell Him what you want Him to do and the direction you’d like your life to go.

Then ask Him how He wants you to act so that His plan can be fulfilled in your life – then open Scripture & begin reading with an expectant heart for God’s direction for you.

He promises never to leave or forsake you!

Deuteronomy 31:8

3. Surround Yourself with Supportive People

In moments of weakness, stress, or discouragement it can be helpful to turn to those around you for strength and support.

Building a strong network of trusted family and friends will not only provide positive reinforcement in your faith walk but can also provide tangible solutions that help resolve difficult problems.

If you are struggling with negative thought patterns or self-defeating internal chatter, a loving friend or family member can often help provide perspective and guide you back on the right track.

Not only is it helpful to surround yourself with supportive people, but having encouragers can also serve as a reminder of God’s presence in your life, even when the pathway feels too challenging or lonely to walk by yourself.

By surrounding yourself with the right people who will pray for you, encourage you in your spiritual journey, and hold you accountable for living according to biblical principles; you will find that God’s strength is more accessible than ever before.

These same individuals are also great sounding boards when prayer alone isn’t enough – at times we all need someone with whom we can share our burdens so that we may be released from them.

Look for others who are striving for similar goals and don’t be discouraged if perfectionism is something that holds you back; no one is perfect!

Remembering God’s grace and compassion will help keep us humble and inspired even when things get tough.

Summary of Key Points

The source of our strength, in all circumstances and in every season, is God. No matter where we are, who we are with, or what we are doing – He is the one constant in our lives and the one thing that will bring us joy.

Despite our circumstances and the challenges we face, once we understand that God is our strength and that He will never leave us nor forsake us – it provides comfort, solace, and assurance.

We can draw on God’s love for us as well as His power to carry us through troubled times. We can have confidence knowing that His Word will come to fruition even if it does not look like it right now.

All we must do is trust Him and surrender to His guidance and He will deliver according to His promises.

We can receive inner peace from knowing that no matter the storm or difficulty before or around us – God is always with us and He gives unending strength for each step taken toward Him.

If you feel like circumstances in life are getting difficult to handle or life’s struggles have become too much, simply open your mouth in prayer unto God asking Him to provide you with the strength and courage needed to persevere through such hard times as stated throughout His Holy Word;

“Fear not, for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea; I will help thee; yea; I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness” (Isaiah 41:10).

Final Thoughts

When looking to God as the source of our strength, we can be assured that He will not fail us in any time of need. Though our circumstances may be uncertain or even difficult, He is always with us. We can turn to Him and His word for guidance and reassurance based on His unchanging character.

Ultimately, we can find strength in God through understanding that He loves us, has a perfect plan for us, and will never forsake us.

As we seek to know Him better and trust in Him more, we can find hope in the knowledge of His loving-kindness, the promise of protection and provision, and assurance that He is Sovereign over all things.
