Some things in life leave us shaken and confused. A dream we can’t shake, a diagnosis we can’t process, a passage of Scripture we can’t grasp, a season that makes no sense. And in that confusion, our minds love to race, filling the silence with anxious guesses and fears.

Daniel knew that feeling. Overwhelmed by a troubling vision, he did something wise. He did not spiral in speculation. He drew near and asked for the true meaning. When you do not understand, that is exactly the move.

Daniel had just seen a disturbing vision, four terrifying beasts and a scene of judgment, and it left him deeply shaken. But watch what he did. He did not sit alone in his fear, spinning theories. He drew near to one who stood by and asked for the truth of it all.

Notice that Daniel asked right away. He did not wait until the vision was over or try to decode it on his own. He humbly asked for help, and the interpretation was given to him.

Here is the lesson. Even Daniel, one of the wisest men in the Bible, did not know everything, and he was not ashamed to ask. Seeking understanding from God is not a sign of weak faith but a sign of humble, honest faith.

When You Do Not Understand: A Reflection

When you do not understand something God is doing, or something life has thrown at you, your mind will try to fill the gaps. And left to itself, it usually fills them with fear.

But there is a better way, the way Daniel modeled: stop guessing, and start asking. As one commentator put it, no one need be ashamed to ask for the knowledge of truth.

Consider a couple from the book of Judges. An angel appeared to the wife of a man named Manoah and announced that they would have a special son who would begin to deliver Israel.

It was wonderful news, but also overwhelming, full of instructions they were not sure if they understood.

So what did Manoah do? He did not just assume he knew best. He prayed, O Lord, please let the man of God You sent come to us again and teach us what we shall do.

So you see, when he did not understand, he asked God for more understanding. And God graciously sent the messenger back to teach them.

James 1:5 gives us that same open door: if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. God is not annoyed by your questions.

So when you do not understand, do not spiral. Go to God for guidance and direction, learn to walk the guided path, and lean into His wisdom and discernment.

When you don’t understand, ask the One who does.
