Balak, king of Moab, feared Israel and hired Balaam, a renowned diviner, to curse them for pay.

Before Balaam could even travel, God intervened directly, forbidding the journey and the curse in one command.

The reason was covenant: “for they are blessed.” Israel camped peacefully in the plains, completely unaware that a spiritual assassination attempt had just been cancelled overhead.

The truth is, unseen restraint means God is answering prayers you have not even prayed yet. He revealed this ministry to Abimelech in Genesis 20:6 by saying:

Yes, I know that you did this in the integrity of your heart. For I also withheld you from sinning against Me; therefore I did not let you touch her.

This verse unveils our theme; God actively withholds people from actions that would harm His own, restraining hands, redirecting plans, and closing doors we never knew were open.

Israel’s story with Balaam is stunning precisely because Israel never witnessed it. While they cooked meals and raised children in the plains of Moab, a king and a prophet negotiated their destruction on a mountaintop, and God repeatedly turned the intended curse into blessing.

Moses later told them plainly: “the Lord your God turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves you” (Deuteronomy 23:5). So you see, God’s love is the engine of unseen restraint.

I want you to solemnly think honestly about your own history:

• The accident that somehow missed you.

• The deal that collapsed before it trapped you.

• The relationship that ended before it destroyed you.

• The slander that never gained traction, and many more!

Psalm 105:14-15 says He permits no one to do His anointed harm. So think deeply about this: How many Balaams have been silenced over your life without your knowledge?

So how should you live today?

• Thank God for invisible mercies; worship Him for protections you cannot list because you never saw them.

• Stay under the blessing; unseen restraint operated because Israel was covenant-marked, so walk closely with God, seeking Him with all your heart.

• Release anxiety about hidden enemies; the God of unseen restraint watches plots you cannot monitor, so keep living in hope rather than fear.

What He blocked yesterday, He still blocks today.
