It’s Time to Begin: A Daily Devotional (Ezra 3:8)

There is a gap where so many God-given dreams quietly die. It is the gap between knowing what God has called you to do and actually starting it. We plan, we pray, we prepare, and then we wait, and wait, until the calling gathers dust. But at some point, God is not asking you to plan more. He is saying, it’s time to begin.

The returned exiles reached that moment. In the second year, they stopped preparing and started building the house of God. They obeyed without delay.

After a long journey home and the hard work of resettling in a ruined land, the people finally reached the second year. And in the second month of that year, they did something decisive: they began work on the house of God.

Notice the simple, powerful word: began. There had been preparation, planning, and even opposition and delay. But now, they stopped waiting and started building. They put their hands to the assignment God had given them.

Here is the principle. There is a season to prepare, but eventually the moment comes to begin. God had called them to rebuild His house, and timely obedience meant acting on that call, not postponing it forever. When God has spoken, delay is not devotion; obedience is.

But faith eventually has to move. As Matthew Henry observed, when a good work must be done, it is wisdom to set about it quickly and not lose time. At some point, it’s time to begin.

Consider a tax collector named Levi, whom we know as Matthew. He was sitting at his tax booth, comfortable and settled in a lucrative but compromised life, when Jesus walked by and said two simple words: follow Me.

And the Bible says Levi rose up, left all, and followed Him. He did not ask for time to think it over. He did not say, let me finish this tax season first.

When Jesus called, he knew it’s time to begin, and he got up at once. That immediate obedience turned a tax collector into an apostle who wrote a Gospel read by billions.

The psalmist captured this heart in Psalm 119:60: I made haste, and did not delay to keep Your commandments.

Notice, he made haste. He did not drag his feet. Prompt obedience is a mark of a heart that truly trusts God.

So what has God been nudging you to start? Do not let it die in the waiting. Choose to obey without delay, step into the new beginning He is offering, and walk in the favor that follows obedience.
