Remember These Things: A Daily Devotional (2 Peter 1:12-13)

Why should we remember these things? See, you do not forget the truth all at once. It fades slowly. A promise you once clung to grows fuzzy, a lesson you learned the hard way quietly slips away, and one day you are anxious about something God already settled long ago.

Peter knew this about us. So even though his readers already knew the truth, he kept saying, I will remind you always. He understood that we do not just need new information, rather we need to remember these things we already know.

This devotional is a gentle nudge to do exactly that. Because to remember these things is to keep your faith awake and alive.

Peter wrote this near the end of his life, aware his death was close. His readers were not new believers; they already knew the truth and were firmly established in it. And yet Peter says, I will not fail to remind you always.

Why remind people of what they already know? Because knowing a truth and living in the power of it are two different things. Truth we do not revisit slowly grows cold and quiet in our hearts.

So Peter says he wants to stir you up by reminding you. A reminder is not new information, rather it is a spark that reawakens what has gone dormant, stirring settled truth back into living faith.

We are strangely forgetful people. We can experience God’s faithfulness on Monday and be gripped by fear on Tuesday. That is why God, all through the Bible, builds in reminders. He knows we need to remember these things.

Think of what happened when Israel crossed the Jordan River into the promised land. God stopped the waters and let them cross on dry ground.

Then He gave a strange command: take twelve stones from the riverbed and stack them on the bank.

Why? So that in years to come, when their children asked, what do these stones mean, the parents would remember these things, telling the story of what God had done.

Simply explained, the stones were a memorial, a physical reminder, so that a whole generation would never forget the faithfulness of God.

You need your own memorial stones. Because Psalm 103:2 pleads with our forgetful souls: bless the Lord, and forget not all His benefits.

When you deliberately remember these things, the promises, the answered prayers, the truth of the gospel, your faith is stirred back to life.

So build reminders into your days. Take time to recall the wonders worth remembering, meditate on these things, and renew your mind in God’s Word. Do not chase only what is new.

Remember the things you already know, and let the old truth catch fire in you again.
