You have eternal life if you believe in Jesus Christ. This is not a hope or a wish. It is a fact that God wants you to know with certainty. Many Christians live with constant doubt about their salvation. They wonder if they are truly saved, if they have done enough, or if God really accepts them.
But God never intended for His children to live in this kind of uncertainty. He gave us clear promises so we can have complete confidence in our salvation.
You Have Eternal Life: Key Takeaway
- Believers can know with certainty that they possess eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ.
Anchor Bible Verse of the day
These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
— 1 John 5:13 (NKJV)
John wrote his letter with a specific purpose. He wanted believers to know with absolute certainty that they possess eternal life. This verse is not saying “maybe” or “hopefully.” It says you can KNOW that you have eternal life.
The foundation of this assurance is faith in the name of the Son of God. If you truly believe in Jesus Christ, then according to God’s Word, you have eternal life right now. Not someday. Not if you are good enough. Right now.
Key Explanations
- These things I have written: John’s entire letter provides tests and evidence to help believers confirm their genuine faith
- Those who believe in the name of the Son of God: Those who trust in Jesus’ identity, character, and saving work as God’s Son
- That you may know: Not guess, hope, or wonder, but have confident knowledge of your salvation
- You have eternal life: Present tense possession – you already have it now, not just a future promise
You Have Eternal Life: A Reflection
For you to have eternal life is one of the most important truths a Christian can understand. Too many believers live in constant fear and doubt.
They examine their lives, see their failures and sins, and question whether they are really saved. They wonder if they prayed the right prayer, felt the right feelings, or have enough faith.
But this uncertainty contradicts what God says in His Word. John 10:28-29 promises,
And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand.
If you have eternal life, nothing can take it away from you.
The key question is not about your perfection but about your faith:
- Do you believe in Jesus Christ?
- Do you trust that His death on the cross paid for your sins?
- Have you received Him as your Lord and Savior?
If your answer is yes, then according to God’s promise, you have eternal life.
Think about the thief on the cross in Luke 23. This man had done nothing good. He had no time to prove his faith with works. He could not be baptized, attend church, or serve in ministry.
All he did was turn to Jesus in his final moments and say, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” And Jesus responded, “Today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
That man knew he had eternal life based solely on Jesus’ promise.
Your assurance should rest on the same foundation. Not on your performance, but on God’s promise. Not on your feelings, but on His Word.
The Bible makes it clear that salvation is a gift received by faith, not a reward earned by works. Ephesians 2:8-9 says,
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
Some people think it is arrogant to say, “I know I have eternal life.” They believe such confidence shows pride. But actually, the opposite is true.
To doubt God’s promise after He has clearly stated it is to call Him a liar. True humility believes what God says, even when it seems too good to be true.
Beloved, you have eternal life because God said so, not because you deserve it.
Of course, genuine faith produces evidence. John’s letter describes several tests of true faith. If you claim to believe in Jesus but your life shows no change, you should examine whether your faith is real.
True believers love other Christians, obey God’s commands, and continue believing in Jesus. These are not requirements to earn salvation, but they are evidence that your faith is genuine.
However, the presence of this evidence should not be confused with the basis of your assurance.
Your assurance rests on God’s promise to save all who believe in His Son. The evidences simply confirm that your faith is real. Even when you fail and sin, even when you struggle and doubt, even when you feel weak and unworthy, you have eternal life if you believe in Jesus.
Martin Luther once said, “Do you feel your sins are forgiven?” Someone asked him. He replied, “No, but I’m as sure of it as heaven, for feelings come and feelings go, and feelings are deceiving: My faith is in the Word of God, nothing else is worth believing.”
Make this your confidence, too. Stop looking at yourself and start looking at Christ. Stop measuring your worthiness and start trusting His promise. You cannot earn eternal life, but you can receive it as a gift through faith. If you have received Christ, then you have eternal life.
Know it, believe it, and live in the joy of this wonderful truth.
