» Friday, 27th January 2023 | I Stand In The Gap Daily Devotional | Overcoming Temptation with God’s Help

Yesterday’s daily devotional theme was “seeking wisdom in decision-making“ and today’s is “overcoming temptation with God’s help”.

Devotional verse of the day

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

1 Corinthians 10:13

Our daily devotional verse of the day highlights that God is faithful and will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able to handle. Additionally, it states that God provides a way of escape from temptation, which is a form of protection and direction from Him.

By this verse, we are encouraged to trust in God’s guidance and protection when we are faced with temptation and to look for a way of escape that He has provided.

Themes found in 1 Corinthians 10:13:

  • God providing a way of escape from temptation
  • God’s protection and guidance in the midst of temptation
  • God will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we can bear.
  • The importance of remaining strong and steadfast in our faith, even when faced with difficult temptations.

Background:

The Apostle Paul in writing to the early Christian church in the city of Corinth, as part of a larger discussion, is encouraging the Corinthians to be strong in their faith and to avoid being drawn into the immoral practices of the culture around them.

Basically, Paul is reminding the Corinthians that they are not alone in facing temptation, that God is always with them, and that He is faithful enough to provide a way out of any difficult situation.

Similar Verses:

13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

James 1:13-15

James is emphasizing the source of our temptation, which is not from God but from within ourselves. He is pointing out that our own desires and passions can lead us to be enticed and drawn away from God’s will, and whilst God does not tempt us, He does provide a way out of temptation through His grace and wisdom.

Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

James 4:7

This verse highlights the importance of submitting to God and resisting the devil in order to overcome temptation. It emphasizes that when we align ourselves with God and actively resist the devil’s temptations, he, the devil will flee from us.

Reflection on overcoming temptation:

Every Christian constantly faces temptations and challenges that test our faith and commitment to God.

Based on the themes in our devotional verse of the day, we learn that God is always there to help us through difficult times and temptations, for He is faithful and will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we can handle.

This is a powerful reminder that we can trust in God’s protection and guidance in the midst of temptation.

Dear Believer, it is important to remember that God is always present and willing to help us through the temptations we face. The onus rests on us to always turn to Him for guidance and protection in the midst of these temptations.

One thing though, remember that temptation is a part of life, but with God’s help, we can overcome it.

Our anchor verse of 1 Corinthians 10:13 is not just a promise of protection, but also a call to action.

The verse states that God will provide a way out of temptation, but it is up to us to take it. See, it is not enough to simply rely on God’s protection, we must actively seek it and make the conscious decision and effort to avoid and resist temptation. This is where the theme of guidance comes into play.

In our current Christian dispensation, it is crucial that we seek God’s protection and guidance actively in our everyday lives, especially in the face of the various temptations that we may encounter.

Note that it is only through God’s strength and guidance that we can overcome any temptation that comes our way.

Prayer:

Our Father,

As we face the daily struggles and temptations of life, we turn to you for profound divinely orchestrated protection and guidance for our lives.

We trust in your promises, as stated in 1 Corinthians 10:13, that you will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we can bear and that you will provide a way out for us. Whenever we are tempted to sin, let the Holy Spirit intervene.

We ask for your wisdom and discernment as we navigate the challenges that come our way. Help us to recognize the temptations that seek to pull us away from you, and give us the strength and courage to resist them.

We know that through your protection and direction, we can overcome any temptation and remain steadfast in our faith. We give you all the glory and praise, for you alone are our strength and our shield.

In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
