To me, each day is a season of holy waiting, when the people of God lean forward in anticipation of Christ’s coming. Waiting, however, need not be gloomy.
There is a joyful expectation that fills believers who trust the God of hope. Joy and peace are not rewards at the end of the wait; they are companions during it.
Today’s devotional will show you how to wait with a singing heart. If your season feels like a long delay, read on; hope is about to overflow.
Wait on God with a guarded heart.

Joyful Expectation: Key Takeaway
- The God of hope fills waiting believers with overflowing joy and perfect peace.
Verse of the Day
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
— (Romans 15:13, NKJV)
Paul closed the doctrinal heart of Romans with this benediction, praying over believers from different backgrounds learning to live in unity.
He named God “the God of hope,” because hope originates in God’s character, not in improving circumstances.
The verse reveals the pathway: believing leads to joy and peace, and the Holy Spirit causes hope to overflow beyond our natural capacity.
Key Explanations
- The God of hope: God Himself is the source and sustainer of all true hope.
- All joy and peace in believing: Joy and peace flow from trusting God, not from circumstances.
- Abound in hope: Hope that overflows, spilling beyond ourselves to bless others.
- By the power of the Holy Spirit: The Spirit supplies what human optimism cannot produce.
Joyful Expectation: A Reflection
Beloved, joyful expectation is the posture of Advent and the posture of every trusting believer.
The angel announced it at Bethlehem in Luke 2:10:
Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.
This verse explains our theme; the coming of Christ turns fearful waiting into celebration, because the promise-keeping God always arrives.
Waiting with joy is possible because our hope is anchored in God’s character. During Advent, believers rehearse hope, peace, joy, and love, remembering that the same God who kept His first promise in Bethlehem will keep every promise that remains.
Consider Simeon in Luke 2. This just and devout man was “waiting for the consolation of Israel,” and the Holy Spirit had promised he would see the Messiah before death.
Year after year he waited with joyful expectation, and one ordinary day, God placed the Christ child in his arms.
Simeon’s song teaches us that God’s promises may tarry, but they never fail; the God of hope always fills those who keep believing.
So how should you live today?
- Refuse to wait passively or anxiously. Wait worshipfully.
- Feed your expectation with the Word each morning, thank God in advance for promises not yet visible, and let the Holy Spirit, not your circumstances, set the temperature of your heart.
- Where hope feels thin, ask for a fresh filling, for this is exactly what today’s verse promises; a heart of renewed hope that abounds by the Spirit’s power.
Keep living in hope, and your joyful expectation will become a testimony that draws weary hearts toward Christ this season.
Blessings…!
