In this daily devotional, we will explore how to ask God for what we need and how to receive His gifts with grace. Drawing from Scripture, we will learn how to approach God with confidence and thankfulness, no matter what He gives us.

Let’s get started with knocking on Heaven’s door: asking and receiving from God.

» Wednesday, 1st February 2023 | I Stand In The Gap Daily Devotional | Knock Knock: Asking and Receiving from God

Yesterday’s daily devotional theme was “delivered from the enemy’s ambush“ and today’s is “asking and receiving from God”.

Anchor verse of the day

Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

Matthew 7:7

In our daily devotional anchor verse of the day, Jesus is teaching his followers about the power of prayer and how they can receive what they ask for from God.

It’s basically about persistence in the prayers of believers, for when we pray something happens. Matthew 7:7 is a reminder that we can receive all that we need from God if we simply ask and seek with faith and persistence.

Background to Matthew 7:7

Matthew 7:7 is part of the Sermon on the Mount, which is a teaching Jesus delivered to a large crowd on a hillside in Galilee. The Sermon on the Mount is recorded in the Gospel of Matthew, chapters 5-7, and contains some of Jesus’ most famous teachings, including:

  • The Lord’s Prayer,
  • The Beatitudes, and
  • Build on the Rock

In our anchor verse of Matthew 7:7, Jesus is teaching about prayer and the importance of persistence in asking for what we need. He encourages his listeners to ask for what they need, to seek it, and knock on the door, saying that if they do so, the Father will give them what they ask for.

Themes of Matthew 7:7

  • Asking and receiving from God
  • Faith and trust in God
  • God’s generosity and willingness to give
  • The power of prayer and asking in faith
  • The importance of persistence and determination in prayer.

Similar verses:

You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask.

James 4:2

This verse highlights the importance of asking God for what we need.

In the same way, as mentioned in Matthew 7:7, asking is an important step in receiving. James 4:2 expands on the idea that asking is a crucial part of receiving and that we often do not receive because we do not ask.

If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.

John 15:7

This verse builds on the idea of asking and emphasizes the connection between asking and abiding in Jesus.

Abiding in Jesus means living in a close relationship with Him, and when we do, our desires become aligned with His will. As a result, when we ask, we can be confident that our requests will be granted because they are in line with God’s will and purpose.

Reflection on asking and receiving from God

In today’s fast-paced world, it can be easy to become overwhelmed by the weight of our daily responsibilities and struggles, for life has become a rat race really.

However, as Christians, we are reminded in Matthew 7:7 that we can turn to God and ask for his help and guidance in all things. Yes, all things.

As we consider this verse, we are encouraged to be bold in our requests and trust in God’s faithfulness to answer us. When we knock on heaven’s door, seeking guidance and help, we can be confident that God will open it and pour out his blessings upon us.

Whether we are facing a difficult situation, seeking direction for our future, or simply looking for peace and comfort, God is always there to meet our needs and provide for us.

In this reflection, let us remember the words of Matthew 7:7, and let us approach the throne of grace with confidence, trusting in God’s promise to provide for us and to guide us along our journey.

I pray that we find joy and peace in the knowledge that we are never alone and that God is always with us, guiding us and giving us strength to face whatever comes our way.

I’m directed to say this: you may be facing a health challenge or require an urgent miracle from God. Place your hand on your heart and focus on that infirmity or your need. Out of the depths of your heart, ask God to perform a miracle for you in the name of Jesus. May your miracle come through. Amen.

Let us pray:

Our Father in Heaven,

As we start this day, we come before your throne of grace, with hearts filled with gratitude and a deep sense of trust. We know that you are a loving God who desires to bless each one of us and meet all our needs.

As we read in Matthew 7:7, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you,” we are reminded of your promise to hear our cries and respond to our requests.

In this journey of life, we often face challenges and difficulties that can leave us feeling helpless and lost. At times, we suffer sicknesses that we cannot understand. But, dear Lord, we know that we can turn to you and trust that you will provide for us and heal us.

We pray that we may have the courage and faith to boldly ask for your guidance and provision in all areas of our lives. Help us to have the heart of a seeker, constantly seeking your presence and your will for our lives.

We thank you for the joy that comes from experiencing your love and grace. May we always be mindful of your presence in our lives and the blessings you have already given us.

We ask all these things in the precious and loving name of Jesus Christ, your Son, and our Lord and Savior. Amen.
