When the world mocks your faith, it feels like the opposite of blessing. But Peter insists that the Spirit of glory rests on you precisely then.

Come to think of it, there is no more vivid picture of this than the death of Stephen.

Stephen was dragged before an angry council on false charges, reviled and accused. And yet, as they glared at him, the Bible says his face was seen to shine like the face of an angel. So you see, the reproach did not diminish him; the glory of God visibly rested on him.

Those reproached for Christ are blessed, for glory belongs to them. Then, as they raged and stoned him, Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing to welcome him.

At the very moment he was most despised by men, the Spirit of glory rested on him most powerfully. He even prayed for his killers, glorifying God with his final breath.

The apostle Paul knew this too. In 2 Corinthians 12 he said he took pleasure in reproaches for Christ’s sake, because the power of Christ rested on him in his weakness. Meaning, what the world uses to tear you down, God uses to rest His glory on you.

So do not be ashamed when you are mocked for Jesus. Welcome His indwelling presence, remember the cloud of glory that rests on His people, and learn to glory in the cross of Christ.
